Dildos – An Introduction for the Uninitiated

Dildos can be a really fun addition to the bedroom provided you know what to do with them. Dildos are distinct from vibrators because they don’t contain any moving parts. They’re designed to be used for vaginal or anal penetration and can be made from a wide variety of materials including wood, metal, vinyl, silicone, rubber and even glass!

Choosing the right Dildo

Dildos are really a matter of taste (no pun intended) and as there are such an enormous variety of them you really will be spoiled for choice when it comes to deciding which dildo is right for you. When choosing, consider which material you’d prefer your dildo to be made from and your preferred size and shape.

You can opt for a super realistic dildo that looks just like a penis, or something a bit more avant-garde! You’ll even find dildos modelled on the ‘manhoods’ of famous porn stars. For many men, watching their partner with someone else is a common fantasy, so if you want to try this out without going the whole hog a realistic dildo is a great place to start.

As well as large dildos you can also find smaller and more discreet models available which are ideal for travelling or slipping into a bag or drawer. You’ll also find dildos with different attachments designed to do different things, such as stimulate the anus or the G spot.

Double penetration can be achieved with a double ended dildo that can be bent to form a C shape. If you do plan to use a dildo anally make sure it has a flared handle at the bottom so it can’t slip into the rectum if fully inserted.

Size and Girth

Dildos range from small and neat to downright monstrous. Some can be more than 12” long and 3” wide, which would be a pretty intimidating starting place. To find out the size you’re comfortable with you can use your fingers or a vegetable such as a cucumber or a courgette as a measuring stick (provided you wash it thoroughly first).

Getting to Grips with Dildos

Whether you’re planning to use a dildo yourself or with a partner, experiment alone first to get an idea of what you like. That way if you do come to use it with a partner you’ll be able to guide them as to your likes and dislikes.

Always wash your dildo before use. Carefully check it for any faults and read the instructions before you start. Cover the dildo with a layer of good quality lubricant, but make sure that the lube you choose won’t damage your dildo.

Start by using the dildo externally, gently rubbing it over your most sensitive areas. When you’re ready for penetration, go slowly. Once you’ve got the hang of things you can experiment with depth and how you move the dildo, for example as well as an up and down motion, you can also try a side to side motion.

Keeping Clean

Always wash your dildo thoroughly after you’ve used it. You can do this with mild soap or antibacterial wipes. You can even put some dildos in the dishwasher! When storing your dildo keep it away from sharp objects, as soft materials like rubber and silicone can easily tear.
